Hi Bud,

I am sure if you persevere that you will be able to successfully grow tomatoes. To answer your question you don't have to let the tomatoes ripen on the vine completely, but you do have to be sure they have turned the corner so to speak. In other words they cannot be picked green, but if they have changed and are showing that they have begun to ripen, for red tomatoes that would mean turning a slightly orange colour, then it is OK to pick them. They will continue ripening even after being picked if they have got to this stage and it is a good idea to harvest them because that will encourage the other tomatoes to ripen and the plant to produce more blossom.

Hope that answers your question.

I am an old soldier a flyer from ww11 I enjoy growing things. I bought six plants and they said on the container big boy but they were not. They were those source tomatoes. I did have one plant of the seven vine tomatoes. I just picked the first one it was not too red. I bought the six plants in the local super market. Should I let the tomatoes get very ripe prior to picking ? I probably make a better flyer than gardener. Maybe not I was shot down and shot in both legs and bailed. I hope I do better with these tomatoes Bud Rosch
